Chepstow Leisure Centre Development – NEXT PHASE
The programme of works at Chepstow Leisure Centre, that has been underway since March 2021, forms part of the council’s ‘Looking Ahead, Delivering Now Our Strategy to Summer 2022. Over several phases Chepstow Leisure Centre will benefit from significant improvements to facilities such as the, outdoor playing facilities and pitches, swimming pool and fitness facilities. The investment is also testament to Monmouthshire County Council’s and MonLife’s commitment to addressing the issue of health inequality, enabling more people have an improved experience in its leisure centres, and more opportunities to continue to increase their health and wellbeing.
Phase 1 & 2 of the refurbishment at Chepstow Leisure Centre is now complete. Works in these phases included the following:
- Re-decoration of the pool hall
- Upgrade to the glazing in the pool viewing area
- Full replacement of the celling in the pool hall
- Upgrade to LED lighting (* see information below on the Re:Fit Programme)

*In June 2020 Council approved proposal to introduce the phase 1 of the Re:fit programme. This programme will play a vital role in delivering actions included in the MCC Climate Emergency Strategy adopted in October 2019 and the goals of the MCC Corporate Plan, identifying and implementing energy efficiency improvements and renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions.
Phase 3 is currently underway with improvements to the outdoor facilities and pitches. In December 2021, MonLife was invited to apply for a grant from the Welsh Government, via Sport Wales, and a separate grant from Football Association of Wales, to develop the outdoor playing facilities and pitches at Chepstow Comprehensive School and Leisure Centre. The overall total project funding and grant funding was £101,997 from Monmouthshire County Council, with an additional £433,058 sought from the funding bodies. This funding will allow us to provide a new 3G football pitch (68m x 34.5m), a replacement surface on the Astro Turf pitch and MUGA facilities to include Basketball, Netball and Tennis. In addition to this the cricket nets will be refurbished to allow a 4 lane practice cage.
The proposed project of improvements has been developed in consultation with Chepstow Leisure Centre, Chepstow Comprehensive School, Sport Wales, Football Association of Wales, Hockey Wales and Monmouthshire Junior Football League.
Phase 4 of the works which is due to start shortly will see upgrades to the fitness suite, reception area and the café at Chepstow Leisure Centre. The proposed new facilities will include:
- An upgrade to CV fitness Equipment with audio visual functionality
- New Spin Bikes
- Refurbishment of existing café and kitchen area
- Installation of ‘takeaway’ hatch
- Refurbishment of reception corridor area
